Remember the unspoken rule which says that you “shouldn’t automate your Twitter account”? We’ve all read that one before, but today I’d like to prove to you that you can actually automate your Twitter account…. with a little bit of creativity.

For some reason my attention is always drawn towards how airlines are using social media. Maybe it’s because I spend countless hours searching for affordable fares and promotions to satisfy my hunger to travel. I love to check out the numerous airlines available and this might’ve indirectly led me to cover numerous articles on how airlines are using social media, as well as their failures and success.

Business insider wrote an article that Google should buy twitter a while ago. Although I think acquiring twitter will be a good move for Google, I doubt twitter would ever consider selling. In my opinion, partnering will be a better choice for Google. Although we understand the term “everyone has a price” I doubt twitter are considering to sell their business seeing that they have a lot of plans in the coming future. (hint: more monetization).

I’ve been working with a client of to build their presence of twitter. They had a brand new twitter account set up and had a few strategies that really worked out well for them. In two weeks time we’ve build up a small interest of people who are currently following them and their blog. So I want to share with you the strategies that worked.

Companies are still adopting social media. Some are adopting well while some aren’t … yet. I think some companies might take a while to adopt in this media. I’ve been spending more time on trying getting deals because I’ll be having my holidays soon and I want to book hotels and get great deals (I love social media for that) Some of the companies have twitter account, while some have facebook pages, twitter account, you name it.

So I thought it would be fun to tweet the companies. I sent out few tweets to two companies in the leisure industry to see if they will respond to my tweets or not.

According to emarketer’s latest survey small companies are acquiring more customers compared to large firms and medium size companies.

Surprised? I don’t think you should. Although large companies have more budgets to spend they lack a few success key’s to be more successful in social media. What are those “magical” keys?

@CoffeeGroundz might look like an ordinary  small coffee shop in Houston, Texas.  However one thing you didn’t know about this local coffee shop went on to be first restaurant to own the title for the first order to go on twitter.

I found a great video done by Laura Fitton aka @pistachio on twitter. She is one of the co authors for Twitter For Dummies. In this video  Laura gives 5 business benefits of using twitter even though a customer is not on twitter. I found them useful and should be part of the Twitter For Business series. Video is only 4 minutes long but you’ll learn a lot in the 4 minutes. Enjoy!

Figuring out what to tweet can certainly be tricky. A lot of people make the mistake by going straight for the sell. Which is to me the worst method as people will see them as a spammer. Its harder for smaller business owners as people don’t know who they are compared to a giants like @starbucks and @dell

Always Be Listening – Social media is a great tool. A lot of people teach you “how to market your product” which is the wrong way to start marketing. You should always start by listening. Going straight for the sell will be a bad marketing if you seem to pushy.

Be Personal - Nobody wants to talk to a salesman. Everyone wants to talk to a human being. You have to be personal and approachable to people. Gain the trust and you will get the sale and earn friendship along the way.

Communicate – Communication is one of the most important. You have to learn how to communicate with your customers properly. My advice would be think of them as a friend and not a customer.
