Update: I used the term strategy wrongly earlier, this was actually a tactic and not a strategy. I apologize for the mistake, thank you @markwschaefer for explaining the difference clearly.
Do you have a social media strategy? tactic?
This is a part of our social media blog series where we’ve discussed about having social media goals and doing research. In this post, I want to cover more on social media strategies. tactics
Strategy refers to a plan of action designed to achieve a particular goal. – Wikipedia
@jaroehm says “Social media without a strategy is like cooking without a recipe. Sometimes it works but sometimes it’s a disaster. With a recipe, at least you know what ingredients to have before you get started.”
The question today is what is your tactics? You’ve set your goal, you’ve done your research now it is time for you to write your “domination plan”. All of us will have different set of tactics but one factor to include into your tactics is to make it measurable. This way you will know when you have achieved your goal in a day/week/month and you will know if your tactics worked as you’re able to measure it later on.
I call this … the ‘at least’ tactics. (wanted to make sound cool)
The at least social media strategy tactics
- Connect at least with 10 new people a day
- Write at least 5 comments on different blogs a day
- Write at least 3 blog posts a week
- Tweet at least once per hour
- Follow at least 100 new people a week
- Retweet at least 3 posts from followers a day
- Share at least 1 new status post on facebook a day
- Engage with at least 5 customers a day
- Thank at least 5 customers a day
- Thank people who retweeted you (at least more than 10 a day) – @nittyGriddyBlog
Those are some basics ‘at least‘ tactics which are manageable and can be done in a day.
Below is for you.

What is yours?

Good post.
I think I would add creating and posting at least 24 content tweets a day, create cool and then share it! Cool.
Hey Aaron,
Well your strategy certainly seems to be working for you my friend. I should really think about mimicking or “at least” trying a few of the things you do more often :).
In all honesty – I do quite a few of these things – just a bit differently at times maybe. I engage a heck of a lot – but they’re not always new people – although they are at times. I do a lot of thanking (at least more than 10 a day) – especially for RT’s and comments – whether to new folks or to ones I already know. Doesn’t matter – a thank you to anyone that’s done something nice for you is well worth it. But then again – you already know how I feel about that right ;)?
The one thing I don’t do – which I really should consider – is follow enough people. I’m one of the twitterers that waits for someone to follow her and then I decide if I’m going to follow them back or not. I should actually make more of an effort to search for like-minded individuals to follow, learn from and engage with on Twitter instead of simply waiting for them to get to me first.
This are some good tips to take into consideration. Thank you for sharing your ways Aaron. You’re a great example to follow.
Enjoy your weekend.
Cheers
Thank you 🙂
Agree kat, 24 is a minimum, I think we pass that LoL!
hi,
i loved your strategy. Everyone have a different one. I just write down on what ever topic sticks my mind . For example : i had a debate with a friend on “Android” and i found myself researching and writing a post on ” Android ” that evening. I would rather prefer writing through personal experiences as they come to mind like tides ina ocean.
Hello Ingrid,
I was just thinking about you, writing a blog post about getting more comments and giving a few examples. One of them is by you.
Indeed you are engaging with a heck of people, that is how we connect. I guess the at least would work whenever we don’t have the time. I always use it whenever I am busy. Commenting on 5 blogs is something I want to do more though, so you’ll be seeing me on your blog more often.
I personally find you’re doing everything the right way as you’re socially active on social media and you understand it well too. Reading your comments on your blog and other blogs makes me wonder how you’re able to type such a long comment or if you’re typing really fast!
In other words, you’re simply amazing!!
keep up the great work!!
have a great weekend.
Aaron
Aaron – I’m kinda worried that you’re in my head right now cause that’s exactly the post I’m working on now. OMG!
I actually I started it yesterday and was working on it earlier when I took a break to come here. It’s called “how to get more comments on your blog posts” – but the name might change (to a more creative one) once I’m all done with it. I can’t believe you mentioned that! :))) Amazing!
I would love to read your version of that post :-). Please tell me when it’s out. It will be interesting to see how different or alike ours are. I can’t wait!
Thank you for all the kind things you said about me. I could easily say them right back at you my friend! Every time I stop by here I find a helpful and well-thought out article to read! You’re the one that rocks!
As for my long comments – I have no idea how I do it lol. I just start typing if I have something to say – and then try to find a way to stop haha.
Okay, got to get back to finishing my post. Really incredible! What are the odds that you and I are working on the same kind of post at the exact same time! Wow. 🙂
best of luck
keep rockin’ Twitter King!
Ciao
That is a good strategy too, indeed its different for everyone, take the “comment on 5 blogs” it is similiar with how debating helped you write a blog post. 🙂
It worked for me in the pass too! 🙂
Ingrid – oh my! we gotta stop talking with each other so often! maybe that is why we’re thinking alike! I started it yesterday too! doing some finishing touches to be posted at http://bestbloggingtipsonline.com. I am sure we’ll be able to put our own unique spin on it. You’ve got your creativity + humor + deep thoughts + cheekiness to add to your unique spin. Me… not sure what I should say about mine! LoL!
Thank you for all the support and kind things you’ve said to me too! Could give you a million hugs next time when you visit Malaysia!
have a great weekend 🙂

LOL Aaron!
Well, now I have an even better reason to come visit Malaysia. I’ll be expecting those hugs 😉 – if not – remember the Petronas?! haha
I think you’ll be done before me though – cause I had to stop for a bit to finish my SuperPost Sunday for tomorrow. So I’m aiming for early next week.
I have no doubt that your’s is gonna rock and then some! Once again – you’ve spoiled me with all your amazing words here :-). Thank you Aaron!
I’m sure there are tons of those types of posts out there – I’ve come across a couple already – but I think it’s how put our unique touches and style that will make the difference. And you me dear Aaron – have a heck of style – not to mention your thoroughness!
Talk to you soon!
Ciao
This is a great to-do list. I’ve taken a screenshot and saved it as my desktop background. Thanks : )
Awesome david, GOOD LUCK!
Search for at least 2 keywords in your city a day and connect with new people. 🙂 http://four-point-oh.blogspot.com/
Great strategy, thanks for sharing 🙂
Aaron, I can’t tell you how much I love this series of recent posts. As I haven’t got the degree of experience and social media understanding you are having, I am aiming for a slightly lighter version in some areas. Will however elevate the blog comments. I feel this rocks and helps me to clarify my own thoughts a lot. Keep it up man.
And of course, let me Buffer this again 🙂
Thanks for dropping by again and the compliment Leon
Actually I think you’re doing a good job now with your constant engaging as well as guest post. Keep it up and I am sure you’ll hit your goal anytime soon, consistency is key and you’re consistent.
Keep up the great work!
Aaron
Ok I was with you on the strategy posts but you lost me a little here. How can your initial post about goals be about strategy and another post on actions be abotu strategy too?
This is a fine point but one that deserves clarification. A strategy is a means to achieve goals. A plan is a means to achieve your strategy.
So for example, creating a partnership to deliver unique customer value and a new revenuw stream is a monetization strategy. Blogging, tweeting, and enhancing your reputation in order to attract the best partnership would be a tactical plan.
Another way to look at this — blogging is not a strategy. Lowering your production costs is not a strategy. Taking a class is not a strategy. These are all tactics that can be easily duplicated by your competitors. There is nothing strategic about tweeting in and of itself.
Your strategy is what you are doing to create sustainable points of differentitation. This is the stuff you concentrate on that will make you money : )
Any way, I want to see you get off on the right foot in your career and thinking about the difference between a strategy and a plan might be useful to you. I know many people use these terms interchangably but if you think about what I’m getting at here it might give you an edge. And that’s what I want! : )
Thanks for the good post Aaron!
Hey, Aaron, I have to agree that I think these are tactics not strategy. Yes, strategy should be measurable but perhaps it should read more like, “Raise online awareness of the ABC brand in key target areas: X, Y and Z by 20%.” And, your tactics to do so would be by increasing activity in social media by using the steps you have outlined above. My 2 cents…
Good day Mark,
Thank you dropping by and thank you for the clarification, it took me a lot of readings (a lot) trying to understand the term correctly yesterday. Like you mention, a lot of these terms are interchangeable and it got me confused.
I understood what you meant, and I’ll correct the post after this. I just searched tactical plan and strategy and I notice I wasn’t the only one confused with this terms.
Appreciate you stopping by and explaining to clearly to me mark, now if only I had you as my lecturer in class. That would make class more fun!
Cheers
Aaron
Hello Patty,
Thank you for commenting, yes indeed I have both of them mixed up. Using google didn’t help me much because a lot of people used the terms similarly. I have changed updated the blog post after reading Marks comment, thank you for explaining it to me too. I appreciate it a lot as I take all this as part of my learning.
Aaron
Nice tactics you have here Aaron! Mine are quite similar. Good to see other bloggers putting the ‘Thank You’ in their tactics! I believe its one of the most important things to remember. It shows a little about the person and their attitude.
Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Great list. Agree with all of these (although RTs are a little out of your control, but thank all!)
Thank you Robert, thank you for dropping by and leaving a comment 🙂
Thanks Phil, you’re on the right track to success! Keep up the great work.

Hey Aaron,
Your post was really inspiring. I used it as a basis for my blog post about how people are using Twitter in different manners: http://bit.ly/eJWN8V .I commented a few of your tactics there, I would love to have your input.
I will try to apply your tactics more often starting now, even though I find it hard sometimes to find the time to do all of that every day…But who doesn’t like a good challenge 😉 ?
Thank you for writing such great posts, it’s always a pleasure to read you 🙂
Strategy or tactic, most organization need to include Ushi, Hi5 or Bebo as well as the other country specific or niche social networking sites in their plans since not everyone relies so heavily on FB and Twitter.
