4 Ways to Facilitate Career Progress from Home

February 28, 2018 by Aaron Leave a Comment

When you already have a job or school obligations, it can seem difficult and unpleasant to think about advancing your career during your free time. After all, simply keeping up with your current schedule can be daunting enough, especially if you’re having to routinely show up to a physical campus, job site, or static place of business in order to fulfill your short-term commitments. Fortunately, with a bit of creativity and persistence, you can make plenty of progress towards a better career without ever leaving the comfort of home. With that said, here are some of the best at-home methods that can help you enhance your career for a better income and lifestyle:

1. Enrol in an Online Degree Program

If you’re serious about entering a new field or making yourself eligible for a significantly higher paying occupation, earning a new degree is one of the first steps to consider. Distance learning institutions like the New England College make it possible to earn degrees online in a variety of fields including but not limited to Healthcare Administration, Accounting, Project Management, and Real Estate Management. With such programs, it’s possible to earn an additional degree and get started on a new career path as your schedule permits.

2. Build Experience as an Independent Professional

There’s a saying that goes “never build your home on a foundation that doesn’t belong to you” and it’s very applicable for some professionals who spend years giving their best work to companies without ever expanding their portfolio beyond a single job position or employer. Although it’s good to maintain long-standing business relationships and there’s nothing wrong with being employed by the same company for years, there’s also something to be said about building freelancing/independent experience as a provider or specialist in your field, as it can help to supplement your income or provide a backup plan for times of slow or unsteady employment.

3. Conduct a Thorough Job Search

Aside from working towards a degree via New England College Online and advertising your skill set as an independent freelancer, you may also want to leave open the option of searching for a new employer. You never know what kind of opportunities you could be missing out on until you take the time to check out your local job market. You may even want to broaden your search into other regions or related fields to see if you can find something that could be worth relocating for.

4. Not Settling for Stagnancy

Career stagnancy has become so common that it’s essentially the norm nowadays, as people tend to get comfortable in their current job positions and shy away from change. While it’s good to maintain long-term stability and the climb-the-ladder approach does work for many, it may also be worthwhile to examine alternative employment options or a different career path altogether if you find yourself yearning for something more. Thus, it’s always a good idea to examine your options periodically to ensure you’re not overlooking a course of action that could wind up being more enjoyable than the path you’re on.
