Uniqlo Lucky Line Viral Twitter Marketing

May 25, 2010 by Aaron 5 Comments

So many brands struggle with Twitter Viral Marketing that you might now think that it is impossible to trend on twitter. It is easy to go viral on twitter but to be the top trend on twitter? It is a whole different story.
One of the trending topics  today is uniqlo lucky line. Uniqlo is a casual wear designer, manufacturer and retailer. Uniqlo Lucky Line is a contest where customers virtually lines up and every 26th customer wins  ¥1,000 worth of coupons. People who didn’t win  can try again.

@WillisWee one of our guest author here covered this story at Penn Olson. They talk about Uniqlo key success which were simplicity, meaningful, and fun.

I agree with what they stated, however I think the main reason for becoming a trending topic was this

When @rM1L sent me a twitpic I actually thought everyone who posted this were bots. After looking at it clearly I found out that people who insert their username tweets out a tweet with a “lucky draw” number. After inserting the username and password an auto tweet is sent to their twitter account with the “lucky draw or line” number and a link back to the website. So for me this was one of the main key for their success. Imagine a twitterer has 1000 followers. He joined the contest and a tweet is sent out to his account. Maybe only 10 will click. From that 10, 5 joins the contest and tweets out to their friends. You get my point.

We don’t have to look far from this. Remember when we had a publishing DM which said “LoL is this you” *link* and a lot of people clicked on the link which had their account send the same DM to their friends.

So for me besides they 3 keys of success that have been mention by @PennOlson

1. Doing something different

Different will either help you or break you. For Uniqlo it was something different and fun. Moreover everyone can relate to.Unlike other companies who only tell users to tweet out tweets with #hashtags. Uniqlo had the screen where user just insert their username and password like mentioned above.

2. Be an active part of the twitter community.

The important thing is to be an active part of the Twitter community, not just someone trying to market their business all day long.

The Four Seasons Hotels seem to be special though. They are very active on Twitter. What other brand is there that monitors so actively what is said about them?

    “Milo”
I'm not very sure how many other brands pay attention to what people are talking about them.
I follow four seasons for 6 months now, that is why I know what they were doing LoL..
