Small Business Tips to Give You an Edge

August 22, 2020 by Aaron

Running your small business can be a rewarding and empowering experience. It can help you find your purpose and love going to work every day. It can also be very stressful in a world with so many options clamouring for customer attention. From marketing to working efficiently, it can be hard to know what to prioritize. Knowing some small tips to give you business an edge will help you to enjoy your work instead of it being a source of stress and anxiety.

Support Network

One area that is important for small business owners is building a support network. Being the owner of a small business is stressful and can also be isolating. Finding other business owners in your area or in your niche can go a long way to helping you find support and belonging.

A business coach will help you find solutions to problems or help you make tough decisions. Meeting with a business coach regularly will help you develop leadership and management techniques that will help you in all aspects of your business.

Forming a group of like-minded business owners can also be a huge help. Meeting together to talk about issues and doubts that you have is a great way to be heard and find good ways to solve problems and help others.

Set Goals

You should take time to set specific goals for your business. Progress and growth are not going to happen on its own, so you need to have a clear vision of what you want. You should write down where you want to see yourself in a year and in five years. Then you can develop actionable steps to take to reach those goals.

Your goals should be very specific. Don’t say that you want your business to grow. That is not a goal you are going to be able to measure or work towards. Determine how you want to see growth. Do you want an increase in revenue? Maybe you want to work towards a certain number of regular clients or followers on social media. Depending on your business and the stage you are in, good growth can look like many different things.

Utilize Technology

No matter what business you run, there are going to be ways you can utilize technology to your advantage. Learning to work efficiently will help free up your time to focus on other areas of your business. Software that helps you manage your finances, timesheets, social media, or venue management are all great tools depending on what kind of business you own.

Delegate

Good business owners are able to focus on their larger goals because they become good at delegating. If you are able to pass on some tasks to other people, it frees up your time to focus on other areas. You cannot possibly be able to juggle all aspects of a business on your own. If you try, you are going to find yourself with a serious case of burnout.

It can be hard to delegate aspects of a business you worked so hard on, but it is possible. If you are struggling to delegate to people on your team, try starting off small. Find something small that you can delegate to someone else. Give clear instructions and deadlines and follow up as the deadline approaches. Once you see how what your team is capable of, you can start building and delegating other tasks.

Watch Overhead Costs

Overhead costs like rent, utilities, and supplies can all start to add up if you aren’t careful. Replacing landline phones with internet-based phones, using the cloud instead of computer servers, and getting rid of unnecessary office space can free up a lot of money in your budget. Once you have some extra money in your budget, you can focus on using it to grow your business.

Find a Niche

It is important to find your area of influence and stick to it. Trying to please too many people at once is going to stretch you too thin. You need to focus on a small area and meet the needs of one group of people. If you can build a loyal customer base, then you are going to have a constant stream of revenue.

Once you have an established customer base, then you can think about expanding and growing. Focusing on one area or niche will establish your business as an area of expertise and a place they can trust. This builds customer loyalty and trust. You will also be more likely to build a customer relationship and community.
