Many of us grow up dreaming of owning our business and some of you may be thinking of starting that adventure in the near future. But how do you know when you are ready to take the plunge?
Setting up your own business is never going to be easy but the rewards for those that do can be plentiful. Here are 7 clear signs that you are ready.
1. You’re Deeply Passionate About Your Idea
Sometimes a business starts out of pure passion. Maybe you have an idea that you feel is perfect and you know will make an impact. You may spend a lot of your free time thinking out the idea, discussing it with friends, and even writing ideas out on paper.
This is a good sign that you are ready and is often the first step to creating your own business.
2. The People Around You Believe in the Idea
It’s one thing to believe in your own idea but when the people around you agree that’s a pretty good sign you have a great idea. You might find that others get excited about the prospect and even want to join you or invest in your idea.
If there are a number of people around you who think you can do it, it’s likely there are thousands if not millions of others that think so too.
3. You Have Special Access To What You Need to Get Started
You may find that as well as having a great idea that the people and connections you have already can help support that idea. For example, if you are thinking of opening your own cafe and you know someone who can get you a commercial coffee roaster at a discount, this a great sign you should go for it.
Successful businesses rely on their contacts opening doors and providing opportunities for you. Nobody is truly “self-made”.
- You Have a Good Market
When you have an idea built on passion and you know that there are people out there who are willing to pay for your product or service this is a recipe for success. Business owners with passion and potential customers often become quickly successful.
5. You Have a Strategy

No business idea should be without a plan or strategy. If you find yourself developing a business plan in your spare time that can be a very good sign that you’re ready to go for it. When you plan for your business it shows that you are serious about it.
6.You’re a Jack of All Trades
Good business owners are not just skilled in one area, they have skills and experience in all areas of business. Enough to get them by when setting up their own company. If you can go beyond your product or service and are competent with all the background work too like marketing, sales, and accounting you are likely to have a good chance of success.
7. You’re Always Learning
Nobody has all the required skills and experience to set up a business. Those that own a business and are willing to constantly improve themselves and their knowledge will have a much better chance at success than those who think they already know everything.
