How to Sell Products On Your Blog – And Get It Right

June 12, 2018 by Aaron Leave a Comment

Bloggers are always on the lookout for new ways to monetize, and selling products online is one of the easiest ways to start a business. Even if you love offering free content to your readers, chances are you need to pay your bills and put food on the table, so the desire to turn your blog into a business is no bad thing.

Contrary to what a lot of bloggers think, selling products to your readers won’t leave them running for the hills. People will understand your need to make money on your blog so you can keep offering fresh, creative content. There are some exceptions to this, however, so it’s important to get it right.

If you want to start sell products online but you’re worried about scaring away your readers, follow these four tips.

Offer Relevant Products

With modern e-commerce platforms like BigCommerce and Shopify, you can sell just about anything from your blog; clothes, mugs, furniture, e-books, tutorials, you name it! Your products must be relevant to your audience, however. The key is to find out what your readers want and give it to them. If you’ve earned regular traffic blogging about technology and then you try to sell your readers make-up, they’re going to feel like they’ve been tricked, and you’ll quickly lose their trust.

Know the Law

Selling products from your blog makes you a retail business owner. This is an exciting title to have, but it’s one that comes with certain responsibilities. Online sellers have legal obligations to their customers, and there are trade laws that need to be followed. To protect both yourself and your customers, you should find out exactly what the requirements are for retailers are in your state, as the same rules apply to store owners and online business owners. If you’re confused about Retail and Consumer Law and you don’t know where to start, this firm can help you navigate these waters.

Be Transparent

Your readers don’t mind you advertising products on your blog, but they need to know you’re doing it. If you place affiliate links in a post, tell your readers in a short disclaimer that you make money through those sales. Only endorse products that fit your niche, and always be honest with your readers. Be sure to state that opinions are your own while still making money through affiliate programs, as this will help keep your credibility intact.

Make Offers Visible

If you’ve taken the plunge to sell products through your blog, don’t shy away from that decision. Whatever you’re selling, advertise it proudly with a “Shop Now” button where people can see it. People won’t hunt for your products if they’re not easy to find. You need to make your offers hard to resist, and the best way to do that is to promote them loudly and proudly.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the navigation on your page, as placing your products in different areas of your site will influence a shopper’s behavior. Just remember to use analytics software so you get results from these experiments, as this data can help move your blogging business forward.
