Is Running a Business Whilst Studying a Good Idea?

February 1, 2017 by Aaron Leave a Comment

Studying for a college degree is a lot of hard work – in between attending lectures, workshops, seminars and group meetings, you’ll need to conduct independent study and research, get to know members of the groups that you’ll be working in, complete written assignments, present posters, create plans and gain work experience, alongside all that extra study for finals, too. So, it’s no surprise that many students want to do as little paid work as they can afford in order to have plenty of free time to dedicate to succeeding academically. But, running a business at college could be a worthwhile venture for many students.

Does It Help Your Future Career?

If you’re studying a degree in business and entrepreneurship, for example, or have enrolled on a related program such as a project and program management degree, running your own business as a student could be the beginning of a long and lucrative future career. If running your own business is something that you’ve always wanted to do, then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give it a go whilst at college. After all, your college years are the best time to try new things and discover where your talents lie.

Gain Work Experience

Many students will use the summer break or even take a year out from their college studies to gain relevant work experience that will improve their chances of getting a good job upon graduation. Without any practical work experience, graduates can be easily overlooked, so this is becoming just as important to students as exams and their final dissertation or thesis. Running your own business is an excellent way to gain work experience for your resume and it demonstrates a range of excellent skills and talents to any potential employers, who will certainly be impressed if you’ve managed to successfully run a business whilst studying full-time, too.

Business Opportunities

The time that you spend at college is filled with opportunities for business ideas. Your college campus itself is a great place to find inspiration, conduct market research and figure out what it is that your fellow students are missing, so that you can provide it. Even students enrolled on distance learning programs such as an online MSMPP degree can find many opportunities for launching a business that will be useful to the online student community, for example an app or even a social media network aimed at those studying online.

Access to Support

Many colleges will actively encourage their students to challenge themselves and start working on their business ideas. Whether you are currently studying a business program or something completely different, your college will recognize a good business idea and there will be many opportunities to gain support and advice. At college, you can speak to students and professors who have business knowledge and skills that they’re willing to share.

Many students wisely prioritize their academic work, so running a business might seem out of the question. However, pursuing entrepreneurship as a student can actually be a good idea with so much support available at colleges.
