Old School Marketing Tactics That Still Work

April 24, 2020 by Aaron

New isn’t always best. In the age of social media and digital marketing, businesses and brands are taking to their keyboards like never before. The first thing you probably think about while starting a new business is how you will reach your audience online. While it’s very effective and trendy, there are still some old school marketing tactics that you shouldn’t ignore.

Signs

As simple as it may sound, signs are an extremely effective way to put your brand out in the world. A well-done sign is memorable to people who see it. Whether it’s a sign on the front of your store, vehicle wraps on the car you drive around town, or a billboard, you should never underestimate the power of a good sign.

Direct Mail Campaigns

People have become accustomed to scrolling through ads and news articles on social media and deleting promotional emails from their inbox that they tend to miss a lot of marketing material. When you send a flyer, brochure, or postcard directly to people’s homes, they will tend to take more notice.

To grab people’s attention to your mail campaign, include a coupon or special offer. This will give people the push they need to look into your business.

Flyers

Flyers are still just as effective now as they were twenty years ago. Posting flyers in your area or handing them out at events or even outside of your store will surely spread awareness of your business.

When you hand a flyer to someone, you have the opportunity to speak with them in-person about your business and answer any questions they may have. Therefore, you are making a more personal impression compared to an advertisement seen online.

Radio Commercials

Thanks to music streaming services, you’re probably under the impression that radio advertising is dead. In fact, radio advertising is still one of the most cost-effective forms of marketing. There are still thousands of people who listen to the radio every day, whether it’s in their cars, at a restaurant, or while they’re getting their hair done. You will surely reach a large audience by running a short commercial multiple times a day on the radio.

Promotional Items

Handing out useful promotional items with your name on it is still effective. While some items may end up in a kitchen drawer and never be used, you still know that whenever that drawer is opened, someone is going to see your name.

Give out useful items such as tote bags or flash drives as a promotion for your business. Let other people do the marketing for you. For example, if someone carries around a bag with your name on it, they’re marketing your brand to others.

New Isn’t Always Best

Social media is an extremely cost-effective and influential form of marketing your business. However, some old school marketing tactics should not be ignored. Simple signage such as vehicle wraps, direct mail campaigns, handing out flyers, recording a radio commercial, or giving away promotional items are still effective ways to market your business.
