How to Improve Your Marketing Knowledge as a Small Business Owner

If you are like many others who discovered the advantages of earning your online marketing degree through a school like Arizona State University then you know what it’s like to put in hard work. With that said once all the hard work comes to an end, then it’s time to start your career. For many people the urge to start their own business is strong, as this can prove to be a very rewarding career path. Of course, there will be obstacles and challenges along the way.

One of those challenges you’ll face is how to go about marketing your business. We’ve put together some tips you can use to get you started and help to build your brand.

Do Some Research

During your time spent earning your marketing degree online, you obviously learned about different types of marketing avenues. It doesn’t hurt to go back to your notes and your studies and really examine the different marketing options available. Remember, some approaches will work better for certain companies. You want to be sure you are marketing in the right way and to the right audience. As well there are a huge variety of books and podcasts available that you can watch and read, just to brush up on a little extra knowledge.

Start with a Plan

While it’s easy to get ahead of yourself and start thinking about all the potential your new business has, it’s important to take the time to lay out a marketing plan. The plan should take a look at what you plan to do initially, then a few months down the line, and a year down the line. Obviously it needs to be a dynamic plan, meaning it changes as the needs and direction of your business also changes. Going about your marketing plan blind is sure to lead you off course, whereas creating a plan that you can stick to will help you get results.

Keep Track and Measurements

In order to determine if your marketing plan is working, you need a way to track results and keep measurements. It’s important to identify which marketing efforts are working for your company and which aren’t. For the ones that aren’t working, instead of just scraping them all together, look deeper to determine if they just need some minor adjustments. Even if you’ve never looked at marketing results and stats, this is a great opportunity to start.

Learn from Mistakes

The fact of the matter is that you will make mistakes. There is no way around it as sometimes you will choose the wrong path. Instead of beating yourself up over a mistake, it’s important to learn from them. This is a great lesson in marketing as you can take a look at why the effort didn’t work, what could have been done differently, and if there is any way to salvage what you’ve already done.

Knowledge Comes from Experience

In the end, you’ll find that experience is perhaps the biggest way to gain knowledge when it comes to marketing. That means experience with the good and the bad and learning from each.
