How to Turn Your Idea Into an Actual Invention

April 26, 2019 by Aaron

The world is full of inventions, many of which have gone on to change how people live and work. While a lot can go into an invention, it doesn’t take a scientist, Harvard grad, or genius to come up with one. Anyone of the billions of people on the planet is capable of coming up with a great invention.

Not only can an invention help propel the world forward, but it can also make the inventor a lot of money. However, while most of us will have an idea for a good product or invention at one time or another, very few of these ever see the light of day. With that in mind, this blog post is going to look at how to turn your idea into an actual product or invention.

Do Research and Utilize Online Resources

First and foremost, you need to perform a little bit of research to see if your idea has been thought of. With so many people out there in the world, a lot of original ideas we have may have already been thought up. The last thing you want to do is spend time and money on your idea, only to find out it’s been done before.

Once you know it has not been done, you need to do some research. This will be on whether there is a need or want for your invention idea. A simple search can often see if there is a need but a better and more modern method is social media. With over 2 billion people using social media worldwide, it is a great place to see what people want and need. You are also able to search for certain terms and see just how many people are interested in the topic of your idea. In addition to research, there are also several different online resources that can provide Invention idea help. They can help you apply for patents, create prototypes, and so much more.

Create a Design and Prototype

Once you see there is a market for your idea, it is a good idea to move along in the process. The next logical step is to come up with a rudimentary design for your product. It can take a while to come up with the right design but once you have it, the next step is to get a prototype made.

There are many different benefits to creating a prototype. It can help you get a better sense of your product, allow you to test it, and allow you to show it off to potential consumers or investors. Of course, before you create a prototype, ensure you are serious about turning your idea into an invention. Depending on your idea, creating a prototype can be a decently expensive endeavor.

Create a Business Plan and “Go-To-Market” Strategy

Once you have a working product and potentially even a patent, the next logical step is to try and make some money from your invention by selling it. However, this is often easier said than done. As a result, you need to take time to create a solid business plan and choose how you’re going to go to market.

You need to come up with viable strategies to both sell and market your products. You need to identify who your buyers are, where they shop, and how you can reach them. No matter how good your product is or what need it solves, unless you have a good plan and strategy for going to market, you might struggle to sell many.

We hope this article has been able to help you learn the steps and some tips for turning your great idea into an actual invention. Of course, there is no guarantee these tips will lead to a successful invention, but you’ll never know unless you try.
