How To Get The Best Results From Your Employees

January 17, 2019 by Aaron Leave a Comment

You need your employees – it can be very difficult to run any kind of business without them – but you also need to get the best results from them.

As a leader, you could go about this the wrong way.

– You could rule them with an iron fist, threatening them with dismissal if they don’t get the results you are looking for.

– You could work them to the bone, pushing them to work long hours until they meet designated targets.

Or you could go about things the right way, and by this, we also mean a kinder way.

How to get the best results from your employees

– Provide excellent training. No matter your budget, you should always make room for training for your employees. You might give this training yourself, especially when skilled in certain areas of your business. Or you might bring in an external trainer; somebody equipped with specialist knowledge. With a team of fully-trained employees, you should get the best results from them.

– Bring in a consultancy firm. The best thing you can do today is hire business consulting services. They are experienced in bringing out the best in people, and that includes you alongside your employees. If there are any weaknesses within your business, such as inefficient business practices and ways of working, they will advise you, and work with you and your team to maximise your potential.

– Offer a carrot on a stick. Working for you should be reward enough! Still, there is value in offering incentives to your employees, as in theory, they should work that bit harder for you. By offering them rewards for bringing in the desired results, such as a cash bonus or the promise of a longer weekend with an extra day off, you might spur your employees into action.

– Set clearer goals. If your employees aren’t getting the results you are looking for; it may be that you are to blame. Perhaps your goals have been hazy, so your team may be unsure on what is expected of them. When you meet them, be that in staff meetings or during performance reviews, lay out your expectations. Tell them what you want them to accomplish, and be precise within your instructions. Ensure your goals are measurable too, so both you and your team know what to aim for.

– Assign jobs that fit your employees. If an employee isn’t bringing in the results required, could it be that you are asking too much of them? Are they working to their job description or have you burdened them with something they aren’t particularly proficient at? While you could train them up with new skills for other jobs within your company, you might allow them to get on with the tasks they are most skilled in for optimum results.

– Don’t overwork your employees. If they are tired and burned out because you have piled work on their desks, then you aren’t going to get the best results from your team. You’re lucky if they actually turn up for work at all! It may be time to outsource some of your business tasks, as this will take the burden off your employees, and give them more time to focus on the parts of the job they are most skilled at.

Finally

By treating your employees fairly, and by working towards their capabilities, you are going to get the best results from them. Talk to your employees too. They might have suggestions to improve what they are doing, or they may have issues that are preventing them from doing their best work, so be prepared to listen.
