The Age-Old Question: How Can A Business Save Money & Still Function?

December 22, 2016 by Aaron Leave a Comment

If you run your own business, then you are no doubt aware of the huge importance of saving as much money as possible. After all, you need to keep on top of your finances if your business is to stay afloat. The truth is, this is one of those areas which many business owners struggle with for many years. Part of the reason for this is that it can actually be quite difficult to achieve. But it is also a case of it being a never ending quest. After all, there is always more money to be saved, more and more penny-pinching that can be done. In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the most reliable methods of saving money in any business. Let’s see what you can do to bring in more money and reduce your outgoings, starting today.

Ask The People You Know For Help

A lot of entrepreneurs are proud to think of themselves as being able to stand on their own two feet. This, after all, is what often leads to their starting up a business in the first place. However, nobody is an island, and there comes a time when everyone could benefit from some help of some kind. One of the easiest and quickest ways to save a little more money in your business is also one of the simplest: just ask people that you know for help. Chances are, you know someone who will be able to help out your business in some way or another. If you are lucky, you will know several people who can do things for you. If nothing else, you should be able to ask your friends and family for help in marketing your business; just ask them to spread the word in the usual way, and they will be doing a lot to save you money on marketing. The more ready you feel to ask people for help, the more likely it is that you can save some money just when you need to. Don’t overlooked this deceptively powerful option.

Be Clever With Promoting

The promoting side of marketing is one of the most important things that you do for your business. It also happens to be one of the most expensive – but only if you are approaching it in the wrong way. The truth is that promotion does not need to cost you very much at all. First of all, there is the word-of-mouth method which we have just described. This is one of the most powerful ways of promoting your business of all, and yet it is entirely free of charge. However, this is not the only money-saving marketing method available to you. There is also the overwhelming power of social media. Used properly, social media can be like a marketer’s best friend, enabling you the opportunity to interact with countless people from around the world. It is clear how this might give you the opportunity to market your business cheaply  in fact, for no money at all – so this is well worth a shot at least.

Green Initiatives

In business, the best solutions are often those which benefit not only yourself and your business, but others as well. A great example of this is when you introduce green initiatives into how you do things. Going green, as it is often known, is a fantastic opportunity to both save money and do something good for the wider planet. There are many green initiatives which you might want to consider, and it is worth thinking about as many of them as possible. One of the strongest examples, of course, is going paperless in the office. You might think that this is all but impossible, but the truth is you can probably do it much easier than you think. You could use a contract management software to have all contracts signed and sent electronically, for example. You could also make sure that your communications with customers and clients are always by email. The truth is, these days there is no actual need to rely on paper at all. Doing so is likely to prove to be a waste of your resources – and a waste of the planet’s resources.

Use Open Source Computing

Most people don’t spend too much time thinking about the software that they use in their business. This is a real shame, because the chances are good that you are wasting money on software you don’t really need. If you find yourself automatically going for the default versions of things, then you might want to consider changing that automatic behaviour and putting some effort into choosing software which is better suited to your business instead. A good example is to use open source software wherever possible. If you are unaware, open source is simply software which has the code available to all. This means that developers, amateur and professional, can improve upon it as they see fit and release it back to the community. More often than not, open source is entirely free of charge, and often even more effective than the proprietary counterparts. If you are looking to save money on your tech, then going for open source all the way is bound to get you off to a good start.

The Cloud

You have no doubt heard plenty about the cloud, and that is because it is both incredibly useful and very cheap to use. With cloud computing, you take the burden off of your own systems, and put it on the parent company. This means that you are much less likely to need to spend money on your own tech updates, for example, and it also ensures that your processes are as effective as they would otherwise be. Using cloud computing really is the way forward; if you are not already doing so, then consider switching over as soon as possible. The different it will make to your budget might be phenomenal.

Use Generic Brands

When it comes to sourcing the equipment and tools that you use in the production of your own work, there is no reason that it always has to be the top brand stuff. The fact is, many businesses waste huge amounts of money this way. Instead, why not try out the generic and lower-brand goods when you are looking for the equipment that you need in your office? Chances are, you will be able to find the same kind of quality goods, but for much less on the price tag. If you are worried about using generic brands, it might be worth trying to get past that bias and just give it a go. You could be pleasantly surprised with the outcome if you do. Try it out and see.

Sponsor Events

When it comes to getting your brand out there, sponsoring events has to be one of the most powerful ways of doing it. This is a cost-effective marketing method which every business should seriously consider. The truth is, it benefits both parties so well that it is unlikely that anyone will be disappointed. If you do decide on this method, it is a good idea to take a look at the possible events that you could sponsor. If you are lucky, you might find something that suits your business down to the ground. The better it suits your business, the more effective it is likely to be. Done right, sponsoring events can be one of the most beneficial things you ever do for your business – and it will save you some serious cash too.
