Going Freelance: 4 Things To Think About

June 22, 2018 by Aaron Leave a Comment

Going freelance is one of those things many people consider in their lives, but not many take that leap of faith and actually make it happen, do they? It is a tricky decision to consider. You have the security of a salary and structure when you work for someone and going freelance means that you have to answer to me, myself and I. But it can really help you to get the balance of working and home life just right. However, if you are serious about going freelance then here are four things to consider.

Where you might work

The first thing to think about when you take this plunge to work is to consider where you might work. This could be at home and perhaps is one of the most common places to do it. It gives you the flexibility of being around while working but it can lead to being distracted if you are not careful. However, you could consider things like a shared office space. This could give you the benefits of working for yourself while also connecting with other people in the same boat. Mixing the two could give you the best of both worlds and help you to tackle the world of freelance like a pro.

When is the best time for you to work

The next thing to think about would be the best time for you to work. No longer do you have to conform to the nine to five standard and you can set your own rules when it comes to when you work. However, my best advice would be to really get to know you and how your mind works. You may find that you are actually more productive and creative at different times of the day. It could be that you work really well first thing in the morning, or it might be that you are a bit of a night owl and are at your most creative bringing the midnight oil. The beauty of working freelance is you can take advantage of when you best work and in theory get more out of your working hours.

Where you will get your paid work from

You seriously need to consider where you will get your paid work from and this is when you need to think about searching out jobs. In truth, there are many ways that you can find projects you could be involved in. Looking on social media platforms, searching out hashtags, and even logging into job sites where projects for freelancers will be advertised. It is up to you to be proactive and search out the jobs as well as hoping that you may get some directly.

How you plan on obtaining that work

Finally, you need to plan how you are going to get obtain that work. Yes a job might be advertised on a website but you won’t be the only freelancer putting themselves forward for it. This is when you might need to brush up on your pitching skills and help you to get the job.

I hope this has made you more aware of some of the things you need to think about if you are going freelance.
