Five Reasons Why You Should Study Business in College

November 26, 2019 by Aaron

There is no shortage of majors you can choose from in college. That can make choosing which one is right for you confusing! However, there are some majors that you’ll find at nearly every college and they are chosen by countless students every year.

Business is one of those majors.

If you’re considering a business major, but you aren’t quite sure yet, these five reasons may help clinch your decision.

There Are Many Aspects of Business You Can Focus On

A business major isn’t just a business major. Just as you’re required to choose a specialization when going to college for education, so too will you choose a specialization when you choose a business major.

That’s a good thing! It means you can focus on the aspects of business that most appeal to you. A few common business majors you can choose from when attending college include:

  • Entrepreneurship is the perfect major for students who have always dreamed of starting their own business.
  • Marketing is a good choice for those are more interested in customers and their needs than the operation of the business.
  • Finance and economics is a great option for those who like working with numbers and data.
  • Global business management can help you learn how to manage a business while traveling the world.

You Will Likely Find a Relevant Job After Graduation

Finding a job after graduation isn’t easy. It isn’t uncommon for college graduates to take odd jobs for a year or even more while they wait for their big break.

However, some majors have a tougher time than others. Business majors are the least likely to have issues finding a job right out of college that relates to their degree.

Business majors are in high demand. In addition, there are few other majors that are as relevant to the real world as business. Whether you studied marketing or finance, you will likely be able to find a business that is searching for entry level positions in your area of study.

In today’s technological world, it’s even easier than ever to find a job. Business majors no longer have to keep their search to local businesses. Instead, marketers and accountants can just as easily work from home, which means you can work for businesses all over the world.

You Aren’t Pigeonholed in Your Career

There are a lot of cool college majors out there. You can study sexuality, comedy, and costume technology, but should you find yourself bored, it’s going to be very difficult for you to find another career without starting all over or going back to college.

Business majors don’t have the same problem. Because business majors encompass so many skills, and there are so many different kinds of businesses, it’s easy for you to make a transition if you become bored in a future position.

You’ll Learn Important Skills

There are many things you learn when studying business that are relevant to many different areas. These are the kinds of skills that many employers are looking for.

Some of the skills you will learn that are relevant to nearly any career you may choose include:

  • Presentation and report writing
  • Self-motivation techniques
  • Time-management
  • Problem solving and creative innovation
  • Collaboration and management

Many employers also correctly assume that those working in business are detail oriented, driven, and hard-working, which is great for any industry. You can use these skills to your advantage while you’re working in business, and nearly anywhere else your career may take you.

The Sky Is the Limit When It Comes to Your Salary

The fact is, you get a job to make money. You don’t want to start a business or work for another company for free! Unlike other majors that don’t pay well, majoring in business is going to provide you with a livable salary.

There is a lot of money in the private sector, which means the sky is the limit when it comes to your salary. With a great idea and hard work, you can make a lot of money over the lifetime of your career.

You can get excited about your short-term salary prospects too. Business graduates make some of the highest starting salaries. Starting salaries are right up there with engineering majors and computer science majors.

Considering a major in business? It’s a great choice! There are many reasons why business is a popular major, and hopefully, these reasons will help you make a confident decision about your future.
