Finding success in the Finance Sector

August 23, 2019 by Aaron

It is fair to say that the finance sector is one of the most important to the global economy. The range of services and solutions it offers to both the public and national economies is crucial to how we all operate. Naturally, investment banks who work for their clients on the world’s stock exchanges and the huge Forex market are a great example of this in action. Banking and finance cover a whole range of key functions which we could not live without, from mobilizing savings to providing personal credit, advice on pensions, small business loans, investment advice and more.

The necessity for the many key tasks and functions that are carried out in the finance sector make it a great career choice. As well as job security in an industry that will always be needed, you get a decent salary, the chance to travel with work, ongoing training and an exciting environment to work in. There are also many opportunities to progress your career.

For an idea of just what rewards a career in finance can offer, you only have to look at Lady Barbara Judge. Starting as a well-respected lawyer, she soon entered the finance industry when she was appointed as an Executive on the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Following that, she went on to even greater things with leadership roles in private equity which eventually saw her set-up her successful private equity firm. All this shows just what rewards a finance career can bring with some hard work and a dash of talent.

If you fancy breaking into this industry yourself, then the below gives ideas of how to go about it.

Get the right qualifications

Although you may find some basic roles in certain areas open to apprenticeships for school leavers, most finance career options will need a Bachelors Degree to access. This makes getting the right education and qualifications vital. While any degree completed to a high enough level should be enough, many people wanting to move into this sector will study economics and math. Holding a degree is a great way to get your foot in the door and be eligible to apply for more advanced roles.

Think about the area you want to work in

The finance sector is a wide-ranging beast with many different jobs. It is crucial to think about what kind you would find interesting to work in before you begin your job search. Doing this will not only save you time when job hunting but also means you will work in a role that you will find enjoyable. Whether it is beavering away as an investment banker, helping people get on the property ladder as a mortgage advisor or advising people on their investments as a financial advisor, there are lots of different career paths to follow.

Network

Networking is an important part of running a business and social media plays a huge role and is something you should be using. When it comes to business, LinkedIn is often the best bet although many businesses do use other platforms to post details of any vacancies they have to fill. Social media presents a useful way to engage with financial companies and business owners on a personal level. Over time, this network will grow so you can call on it when you need help or advice.

Consider starting with work experience

Sometimes you may need to find success in finance by starting with some unpaid work experience. Although this may not sound a recipe for success, it can often work out well. The key thing is to do your best and impress the business you are working at. If you do, they may offer you a permanent position on their payroll and you will be on your way to building a stellar career in the industry.

Keep up to date with latest regulations

Finance is one industry that involves lots of regulations and laws around what goes on. This is to protect the public from any shady practices or being defrauded. To make it as a finance professional, you must keep up with any changes to the law in your niche. If the amount you can lend to someone for a mortgage in comparison to their annual salary changes you must change with it to avoid getting into trouble.

The numbers add up for a career in finance

Working in this industry is not only rewarding financially but also personally. It can help you to forge a lasting career that has ample opportunities for progression as you go forward. If you are looking at getting into work in finance, then the above tips should help. If a fast-paced career where hard work is rewarded floats your boat, then it is a great choice.
