On the face of it, running a wholesale business may sound easy. After all, you just need to focus on business-to-business marketing and selling – you won’t be dealing with the public at all. Not only that, though, but you should find that you aren’t always trying to pitch for new customers. Retailers will always need suppliers to supply them with various goods and services, so wholesale businesses always seem to be in fairly high demand.

You just need to make sure that you are confident running the business and that you keep productivity up as high as possible. That should make your wholesale company a huge success. And, whenever possible, try and navigate away from these following common mistakes.

Do Negotiate Different Prices For Different Customers

Generally speaking, it’s best to always negotiate different prices for different customers. This is especially important if you do sell to both the general public and retailers. You should always undercut the public price to sell to retailers for a lot lower. You will be able to offer retailers a lower price as long as you enforce a rule for minimum orders. This then allows your retailer customers to buy in bulk rather cheaply.

Don’t Neglect Customer Service

Some wholesale businesses have a reputation for poor customer service. They are often thought to be all about the profit! However, neglecting the customer facing side of your company is a really bad strategy as it could turn people away from your business. So, make sure all of your employees are trained in good customer service so that everyone who buys from you will go away happy with their whole experience of your store.

Do Set Up Online

Traditionally, wholesale businesses have inhabited huge warehouses and their customers have had to visit them on site to make single purchases or to set up regular deliveries. But now, thanks to many new wholesale ecommerce platforms, your kind of company can now sell online. And it is really advantageous if you do so, as you will be able to attract clients who aren’t just in your local area.

Don’t Have A Complicated Billing Process

Billing shouldn’t be difficult. It needs to be a streamlined process that benefits both you and your customers. Ideally, you should have automated this process so that bills and invoices can be sent out to customers as soon as they receive their delivery of goods. This should then prompt them to pay so you don’t have to wait too long for the money to appear in your bank account. You might want to reduce the payment terms mentioned on the invoice too as this will help to encourage fast payment as well.

Do Take Regular Stock Checks

If you sell perishable items of fresh food, be sure to take regular stock checks. This will ensure that you don’t ever sell items that are past their use-by date. If that does happen, you could be in store for some very poor reviews!
