Cutting down on business expenditure: 5 tips

August 6, 2019 by Aaron

While some businesses are forced to cut their day-to-day costs as a result of poor performance, sometimes there’s just no time like the present to start saving money in your enterprise. Learning how to cut costs in a way that doesn’t impact your productivity could benefit your business’ profits in the future. If you want to stop your overheads from eating away at your business budget, here are a few money-saving tips.

Change electricity suppliers

The suppliers that keep your business’ taps running and heating on are inevitably going to be a drain on your costs. Rather than stick with your current suppliers, have a hunt around and see who is offering the best deal in the market. For example, comparing business electricity deals could help you to find the best possible price for keeping your lights on.

Go in-house

Hiring external companies and freelancers to do your marketing and extra jobs you can’t do internally might be efficient, but it’s certainly not cost-effective. Doing as much as you can with your in-house staff is one of the most cost-effective ways of getting work finished. You may find it temporarily more costly to hire personnel, but it could save your business money in the long-run.

Insurance

The benefit of renewing your insurance is two-fold; you will find a more affordable insurance policy, and you will protect the cost of your business’ assets. Just like your utility providers, when your insurance renews after a year, the price may well go up. When it comes to the time that you will need to renew your contract, have a look around to see if you can get the same business policy for a much lower price.

Sell unused space

Depending on the size of your business, the building you own may have some unused space. For example, if you have a floor with only a few desks or a loft conversion that is just being used for storage, you could convert this into space to be rented. This could be particularly valuable for other businesses in the area, which will also help to create a sense of community, and maybe even a chance to network.

Use expertise when it’s needed

As mentioned earlier, it is often better to go in-house when it comes to large projects. However, sometimes, you may require specific expertise and knowledge. There is a benefit in knowing when you can use your in-house team, and when you would be putting unnecessary stress on them. Consulting experts will save you making mistakes and draining your in-house resources – it’s just a matter of realizing when you need the advice.

Cutting down on business expenditure will always result in healthier finances. Sometimes this requires an intelligent approach – such as not continually increasing your employees’ workloads and renting unused space to generate income. Cutting down on expenditure shouldn’t mean making life more strenuous for those who work for you. By keeping employees happy and waste to a minimum, your financial year might just look that little bit brighter.
