Can You Really Rely On The Cloud?

January 25, 2017 by Aaron Leave a Comment

Cloud storage is marketed as being the perfect tool for businesses because it offers access to your files wherever you are and is also an effective method of backing up your files. However, despite the fact it can be a highly useful tool for businesses of all shapes and sizes, some business owners worry that it’s not reliable enough.

We’re all aware of the pros of cloud computing, such as the fact it’s easy to use and is affordable as you only tend to pay for what you use, but what about the cons? Are there any cons to cloud storage, and if so, what are they?

There can be security issues

One of the major cons of cloud storage is issues with security. You see, a password tends to be the only safeguard in place protecting your account from computer hackers, which means if this is guessed, a hacker can gain access to all of your data. This is a real problem, especially if you store confidential information on your company’s cloud storage system.

You can lose data

Cloud storage has been known to delete data, which means that many businesses are concerned that their data will be deleted. While this could happen, it is unlikely, as long as you keep up to date with your payments and sign in regularly, your data shouldn’t go anywhere. However, just in case something does disappear, it’s always a good idea to backup anything important to a hard drive as well. That way you don’t have to worry about losing important documents or data and having to try to recover it. Unless, of course, your hard drive breaks down, in which case you may want to know about data recovery prices.

Performance issues

Another con of cloud storage is that sometimes there can be performance issues, which can make using the software difficult. The most common cause of performance issues tends to be linked to a slow internet, as cloud storage runs via the internet. This means that in order to ensure that your cloud storage is working properly, you need to make sure that the internet you have in place is fast and offers good signal.

A lack of availability

A lot of people don’t realize it but cloud storage isn’t unlimited, each company owns a certain amount of online storage, and so, when that’s full, they can no longer offer any more storage. This means that sometimes there is a lack of availability when it comes to cloud storage. This isn’t ideal, especially if you’ve already got an account with a certain company and want to expand it but aren’t able to do so.

While the cloud is a reliable resource most of the time, it’s important to realize that it’s not 100 percent reliable. There are pros and cons to all business solutions, and it’s important to understand that. If the pros outweigh the cons, such as with cloud storage, then using the solution is probably a good idea. However, if they don’t outweigh them, then it probably isn’t.
