How Can You Make Your Office More Energy Efficient

September 6, 2017 by Aaron Leave a Comment

With the cost of energy rising, many companies, especially small businesses, are looking at ways to become more energy efficient. Sometimes, it can be the easiest and most simple changes that can make all the difference.

The most important thing is to work together as a team to make it happen that way everyone will feel that they are contributing to saving energy.

How Can You Make Your Office More Energy Efficient

Energy Supply

The best way to start is by looking at the energy you receive. Think about alternatives to your existing supply. Contact a solar company such as Semper Solaris and discuss having solar panels placed on the roof of your office.

By generating your energy, it will drastically reduce your energy bills, and it’s also a form of clean energy, which is beneficial for the environment.

Be Open and Honest with Your Workers

It’s important that you have the full support of your employees when trying to save energy in the office. They’ll need to do their part to help, so it’s vital that you let them know why you are doing it.

Speak to them and explain the reasons why you need to save energy, and the benefits of doing it. That way, you’re more likely to get them on your side and working together to meet your goals.

Green Champions

One way that you can get your employees involved is to have energy wardens. They work by checking the office for any wasted energy such as lights or equipment left on after use. They can then feed this back so that you can devise ways to improve the situation.

It may be that you need to fit sensor lights so that they turn off after a certain period of inactivity.

Incentivise

If you want your workers to get more involved, try to incentivize the energy goals, perhaps by making it into a competition. You can have teams or individuals who get points if they do certain tasks. It could be that they get rewarded if they turn their computer off at night, or if they turn off the light at their desk.

The winner each week or month can be awarded a prize, or some other incentive such as an extra day off. The more fun it is, the better.

Keep It Basic

Sometimes the most obvious ways to save energy are the best. For example, instead of having everyone going to get their coffee, have a tea rota so that the kettle is only boiled once.

Have all your workers in one office room instead of in several. It will help you to save energy on lighting and heating.

By using incentives and being honest with your teams, you can make a big impact on the level of energy you’re using each day. If you also switch to another energy source, such as solar power, you might not only save money but become self-sufficient. That will have a big impact on your company and your profits.
