5 Things You Might Do with a Marketing Degree

January 26, 2021 by Aaron

Marketing is an age-old concept. Whenever you have someone who wants to sell a product or service, they need to figure out the best way to show it off and draw attention to it. That’s marketing’s essence.

It’s an excellent idea to get yourself a marketing degree from an accredited university. Once you have it, you can go in all sorts of different career directions.

Let’s talk about just a few of the things you can do once you have that marketing degree in your hands.

You Can Work as a Freelancer

Once you have a marketing degree, you might feel like you should sell your skills to the highest bidder. However, you may not want to tie yourself down to one company.

If that’s the case, you can become a freelance marketer. You’ll probably make a profile for yourself on a site like Upwork, and then you’ll utilize the gig economy.

You can build up your profile with each new job you take. You might help a new company develop a comprehensive marketing plan, taking their budget and resources into account.

The freelance lifestyle is nice in some respects because you can work from home and make your own hours. You answer to no one but yourself.

The real problem is that you don’t have healthcare or any benefits. You’ll probably need to get healthcare through the marketplace, which is expensive. You also might set up an IRA rather than a 401K, since, as a freelancer, that’s probably your best way to save money in a retirement account.

You Can Handle a Company’s Social Media Campaigns

Another thing you might do with a marketing degree is to plan or manage a company’s social media campaigns. Social media matters so much these days. Virtually every company uses it, or if they aren’t yet, they should start. It’s how to connect with their customers most easily and directly.

You might not write the social media posts. The company will probably have writers to do that, though you may oversee their hiring process.

Instead, you’ll talk to those involved about what the promotional social media posts should sound like and what tone the company should try to achieve. Striking the right tone could mean the difference between failure and success.

You Can Help a Company Craft Radio Spots and TV Commercials

A company might also decide to create some TV commercials and radio spots. They may mention their products and services on podcasts, or they might write blog posts on their website about their niche.

All of this falls under the marketing umbrella, so a company might use you to spearhead these initiatives. You might get together with a creative team and figure out the best things to write about on the blog and the proper tone to strike with the commercials and radio spots.

You can help steer them away from poor ideas or controversial subject matter. The more you know about their industry, the more valuable you will be to them.

A Company Can Use You for Budget Allocation Help

You might work with a company that has a certain marketing operational budget. They can bring you in either as a freelancer or they can put you on the payroll in a more official capacity.

You can look at their operating budget and allocate different amounts to various areas. You can discuss the merits of pursuing certain avenues versus other ones. You can assess the value of marketing efforts and discard the potentially counterproductive ones.

You can also offer an honest assessment regarding the company’s marketing direction. If you think they’re not dedicating enough money to marketing, you can write up a new budget that you feel will help them get ahead of the competitors.

You Can Help Companies from an SEO Standpoint

You also might help a company that’s not getting the online results they want. For instance, they may not get the web traffic they desire, even though they’ve updated their website recently.

Ineffective search engine optimization might be the issue, and many marketing majors become experts at it. You can use analytics to determine whether the company’s website has some SEO flaws that are hurting its search engine ranking position.

You also might help a company with market research, consumer behavior, or search engine marketing. You will likely learn about all of this as you pursue your marketing degree, and these are all areas in which companies frequently need help.
