4 Common Jobs That Are Surprisingly Dangerous

February 4, 2020 by Aaron

There are some jobs that have a high risk of injury in which you should have  workers’ compensation lawyers on speed dial.

Everyday these people go to work and hope they don’t have a fall, get electrocuted or some other injury that could impact their lives. They are mostly jobs that really need to be done so we should all be thankful that there are people who do take those risks.

Some of these jobs pay really well, so if you are the type that shrugs off danger, then you may find one in this list that really appeals to you.

Here are some of those jobs that require heightened attention to safety if you want to avoid a trip to the hospital.

1 – Warehouse worker

Not too much thought goes into the dangers that warehouse workers face. There is a high possibility of injury on a daily basis.

One of the biggest threats is getting pinned by a vehicle at the loading dock. That can lead to some serious injury or even worse.

There are also conveyor belts that people can snag clothing or a limb and a moving forklift can be hard to avoid on the warehouse floor. The most common injuries are strained backs since there is a lot of heavy lifting required.

There are a lot of ways to prevent these types of injuries at work, but it is a constant battle to avoid them.

2 – Roofer

Being a roofer seems like hard work but not something that takes a lot of skills. The fact is that it is very dangerous and requires the type of person that is dextrous and in very good shape.

The most obvious injury is a fall. And at least 30% of falls from a roof end up in a fatality. This is a seriously dangerous job that doesn’t get much appreciation from people even though it is more dangerous than being a firefighter. In 2017 there were 91 fatalities of roofers compared to 34 for firefighters.

3 – Taxi driver

Think of how driving is more dangerous than flying. Then think of how much a taxi driver is on the road and you can see that it can be quite dangerous. In 2017 there were 64 taxi driver and chauffeur deaths.

Taxis are almost always driving in very congested traffic. With their passengers generally in a rush they can end up in dangerous driving conditions for almost their entire shift.

4 – Landscaper

Yes, doing landscaping is much more dangerous than you would imagine. Also in 2017 there were 191 fatalities. This is far higher than the fatalities of police officers.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the type of equipment they use all day every day.

Chainsaws are extremely dangerous and only takes a second of distraction to have serious consequences. Lawn mowers are also dangerous and if not properly maintained can be fatal. Even aside from the risk of a fatality, there are so many injuries that can result in a damaged back, or broken bone.
