3 Ways to Get a Twitter User’s Attention

October 26, 2010 by Aaron 43 Comments

Want some attention from a  twitterer/tweep/twitter user or a person who tweets? Not getting any attention from them? Great! I’m going show you some which helped me to get some attention from other twitter users, whether they are influential or not. Some of them WORKED on me when others got my attention.

Some have asked me in the past on how they can get followers. Simple. Follow others, question is. How do you get other twitter users attention? Following is just the first step. Getting their attention is the second.

1) Retweets

Retweets are the best methods to get another twitter users attention, question is what do you retweet?

  • Blog Post

I know everyone been telling you that retweets get attention from other twitter user. Truth is they DO get attention from them. Some of the stuff that I say to everyone is that retweet someone once, they will notice you. Retweet them a few times and they will remember you. Why? This is because your avatar is appearing on their timeline more often than usual. This works on some and doesn’t work on some simply because some twitterers are busier than others. So what do you do is.

Retweet them first. Then send them another tweet after that retweet telling them what you felt about their blog post (if that is their post) or thanking them for sharing their article. This will make your tweets appear TWICE on their timeline. Some other effective ways are to ask them how is their day (you have to mean it of course) That will put them in a position to reply to you (most of them do)

I did some test on this (I am a test freak to make sure it works) so I created tested on an unknown twitter account which I have to do “test”. I retweeted a blog post from a blogger, and I send them a tweet saying that I enjoyed reading the article, etc. I also followed them on twitter before after that.

What happened: The blogger replied to me and thanking  and followed me back.

Tips:
Do: Be sure to start with a @username *message*
E.g.: @askaaronlee: Love your blog post on 3 Ways to Get a Twitter Users Attention. Thanks for sharing.

Don’t: Retweet then leavet a message: RT How to: *love your blog post*

Eg: 3 Ways to Get a Twitter Users Attention @askaaronlee love this article mate, thanks for sharing

  • Quote from their blog post

I found this really good. A few days ago I decided to take one of the most important lessons which I got from a blog post and tweeted it and saying “by @username” A few others retweeted that and the person thanked me for tweeting it. I notice that this works because quotes don’t have to be read like blog post. They stand out by itself, and its unique compared to other people retweeting similar stuff.

2) List

Now list works! Know the people who you want to know. Create a list so that you can follow them like a “snake” Most of them will tweet other stuff besides their blog post so do comment on them. Don’t just post “LoL” or “good day” give some thoughts and replying to them.

Build an engagement with them. Do it often and they will notice you. Most of the people will tweet about personal stuff. If they do, reply to them. If they post a question, reply to their question. If you don’t know then recommend someone on by replying to them that user can help them.
All you need is for them to follow you. Then you’re in the circle.

3) DM, DM, DM

I used to think that DM’s are scary! However, I reply to most of my DM’s. A funny thing was I was following someone for some time now, but we’ve not taken the chance to DM each other. So I decided “why not?” I should just send this guy a DM. Funny thing was he replied telling me he always wanted to DM me too. So stuff worked out well there.

Sending a direct message and thanking people for retweeting a particular blog post works too. I had some thanking me in directmessage before, and they got my attention. I did send direct messages to others as well thanking them for retweeting my post blog.

So there you go, three methods that helped me to get attention from other twitterers. There are more ways to get their attention. This are all what you can do to get their attention on twitter. Check out my blog post at best blogging tips online and check out how do you get attention from other bloggers.

What are your thoughts on this? What are other ways that you have used in the past or used now to get attention from other twitter users?

You have to give to get, be it RTs of blog posts, replies. I’ve quoted or paraphrased parts of posts, that works and shows that you’ve actually read the post as does adding a comment. I’ve been slack on the list function, but do have group columns in TweetDeck set up. The biggest point you made there is not the list itself, but the engagement. If someone asks a question or posts what song they’re listening to, reply. That’s the point of Twitter 😉 DM I rarely use, unless it’s something private. I thank people in the stream for RTs, but sometimes may follow up via DM. One thing I’d suggest is that sending links to your “free” e-crap via DM, sure fire way to get the wrong attention.. like the unfollow kind. FWIW.

    Good day!

Agree with you like a 100000% that sending free ecrap is a bad way to end a relationship. It doesn’t work. People think it does, but going straight for that don’t. Its like saying.

Yes! the biggest point which i am saying is the engagement. Engagement works like wonders. It gets attention because it build a two way communication and not one (rt)

These are some very basic and powerful methods that you have shared aaron with us once again. I have always wanted to reach out to some very powerful twitter users and never knew how to reach them in the hectic timelines that they were to have. But, I started retweeting some of there tweets and talking with them and it actually did work. If you stay consistent in this approach there is no reason why you would not get there attention at all. I really liked this post.

I never did mind getting DMs. An auto DM is just their way of letting you know what they provide and to say thanks, although I do not use them myself. DMs are also good for communicating something that the whole world does not need to hear, or would not be interested in hearing. However as far as nods, appreciation for retweets, etc., I would rather receive an @mention.

  21. Aaron Lee says

    October 27, 2010 at 1:51 pm

I agree Tim, I hate auto DM’s and crappy ebook DM’s.
However, I used DM’s to communicate with others and not selling.

I notice some things when sending @mention and DM’s. Most of the DM’s gets replied and not all @mentions are replied. Maybe the @mention got lost somewhere LoL.

As always, a really useful post. I have been trying this for a while now with some fellow writers. It works in the most part but I guess the odd person twitterer just isn’t interested in what I have to say!

Agree Agree Agree, except with the DM part. I really dislike DMs unless it for sharing personal info like email address or phone number. Twitter is supposed to be about open communication, why not thank and acknowledge out in the twitter universe for all to see.

As always Aaron, thoughtful useful tips and I have to agree that in the past I underused DM’s because of the spam and constant click this link to win a …you get the picture…I now use DM’s the same way that you do…I find it invaluable for quick online communication, especially when one is collaborating on a project…

And as Kathy Meyer stated…we can always trust your posts and links because you test them before posting them…I always head to your stream when I sign on because your tweets are informative and I have learned a great deal about Twitter from you…glad to have you as a friend D:) and I know how much you love to get a hug…so sending one your way ~

    Thanks Jackie,

You know I can never get enough of those big lovely hugs. That is true, DM is a quick online communication tool that a lot of us aren’t using effectively yet. Funny thing is when I mention DM a lot of people think of crappy free ebooks. LoL

    cheers

I agree, twitter is suppose to be an open communication however imagine posting everything on twitter for the world to see and everyone following.

I still prefer DM because of the lil privacy chat we can get. Twitter is like a stage while DM is like a coffee table to chat with smaller friends

Great tips Aaron. I find that lists are underused on Twitter, if i like someone i list them in a relevant catagory, and often find myself listed, and followed back. Now i find that i get most of my followers organically. I really wish Twitter had some kind of “Google-analyitcs” type program so i could see how people are finding me on Twitter.

However, i can confirm, your tips on engagement WORK.
