Looking for a reliable Grammarly review?
Many moons ago, some people told me this:
- You can’t write
- Your writing isn’t professional enough
- You shouldn’t blog
- You have poor grammar
- Your posts have so many typos
I’m not going to lie. It broke my heart reading comments like these, especially when I just started blogging.
I nearly gave up blogging.
I didn’t have the confidence to write and share my thoughts because I was afraid people were going to judge me.
Yes, I am terrible at proofreading my own work. It’s a painful task for me. I’m always looking at the big picture and I like getting information out of a set of raw data but I would miss the finer details like grammar.
That was seven years ago! Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine me WRITING and BLOGGING for a LIVING.
Luckily I had amazing friends who helped me along the way. My best friend H would take a look at my work and helped me correct any grammatical errors, typos, etc.
Of course, I couldn’t depend on my friend to constantly be looking out for me since it was taking his time. That is where I starting looking for tools that could help me improve my grammar.
I found several tools which were promising, but many of them couldn’t give me what I was looking for. Most of them would only pick up basic grammatical errors and did not add any other value. Free grammar checkers just doesn’t work for me.
Two years ago, I found a useful app which worked wonders for me.
Grammarly.
The Grammarly Review
What is Grammarly?
Here’s my Grammarly review.
Grammarly is a wicked writing-enhancement platform. You can either write using their platform, or you can paste your work and let Grammarly do its magic. It as simple as writing in Google Docs.
Once you sign up, all you have to do is start writing. BOOM. Done.
Grammarly picks up:
- Grammatical errors
- Typos
- Words that they felt you were misusing
- Overuse of the passive voice
- Overuse of words
- Wordy sentences
- Check for plagiarized work

Grammarly also provides a detailed explanation of why you’ve made a mistake. That way you can learn and not make the same mistakes in the future.
It just works.
Grammarly is perfect if you’re in need of something that improves your writing experience. Whether it’s correcting your grammar, finding typos, or even if English isn’t your first language.
If you install their Google plugin, you can use it for all websites, including your social media platforms. That way you can avoid painfully embarrassing moments.
One of my favorite features is their weekly insights which will let you know your progress for the week and common mistakes that you’ve made.
Grammarly review: free vs. premium:
If you’ve not tried it, I recommend you try their free program first.
Grammarly‘s premium features allow you to supercharge your writing performance and leave no errors unchecked. You will get all the features of Grammarly for Chrome, as well as:
- Over 150 critical grammar and spelling checks
- Over 100 additional advanced grammar and spelling checks
- Vocabulary enhancement suggestions (my favorite feature)
- Change to Genre-specific writing style checks (academic, technical, creative, etc.)
- Plagiarism detector that can check more than 8 billion web pages
Oh, did I mention it is integrated with Microsoft® Office (Windows only)?
How much is Grammarly
Here are the options
- Monthly: $29
- Quarterly: $59.95 ($19.98/m)
- Yearly: $139.95 (11.66/m)
Should you invest in Grammarly?
For me, it was a no-brainer. I invested in an annual program.
I value what Grammarly can do for me. Since my work was in writing, I didn’t have to think twice about it.
This app is useful for everyone. Even if you have an editor that can help proofread your work, this can ease their job and can speed up the process.
Yes, there will be cases where my train of thought had to be expressed by using passive voice. Grammarly, of course, will lower the score and tell you to change it. I ignore it as it works better for me that way.

Grammarly vs. a human proofreader
Can Grammarly substitute a human proofreader?
Of course not. Grammarly won’t beat or replace a human proofreader. It doesn’t always provide the context or feedback that a human proofreader offers. A great proofreader comes with higher cost, but what they provide is a customized service which can be aligned with your style of writing and helps you get your points across the way you want it to be.
Having said that, there are areas which it can compete with a human proofreader. Cost and speed.
Grammarly improves and minimizes several layers of proofreading and editing at a fraction of the cost and time it would otherwise take for a human proofreader. This makes Grammarly a great starter kit for companies to invest in when growing their business first.
If cost and time is something you value; this app is a no-brainer. Invest in Grammarly.
Who is Grammarly for?
Grammarly is for:
- Writers or bloggers who can’t afford a human proofreader (yet)
- Students in College or University
- Social media marketers
- Business owners who do their own writing
- Any online marketers
- Marketing agencies
- Anyone whose day to day job involves writing.
Are there any downsides to Grammarly?
I believe Grammarly should be used as a guideline. You shouldn’t use Grammarly to correct everything it suggests or score 100. Otherwise, you’ll lose the style and characteristics of your work.
Grammarly works wonders when it comes to picking up missing commas, typos, passive words, etc. If you blindly accept all of the suggested corrections your work will not be perfect.
Other than that, Grammarly is one of the best tools out there, and it is up to you to use it as you deem necessary.
Another thing I want to point out is…. I wished Grammarly had an iPhone or iPad app. Since I do all my work in Grammarly, I wished I could just write and edit my work while I’m on the go. Maybe that’s just me.
Summing up my Grammarly review:
That concludes my grammarly review. I believe that as long as you get a score of at least 90% in Grammarly, you’re ready to go. I’ve been using Grammarly for more than a year now and it just works.
None of my clients have mentioned about poor job performance despite my articles being over 1,500-4,000 words long. Yup, 4000!
This goes to show how well Grammarly performs and how I’ll continue to use it for all my work in years to come.
Unless something better comes along of course.
For now, Grammarly is the best investment in my business.
To prove how it has worked for me, here’s my 2015 year in a review that I got from them. The app has checked over 200,000 words. That’s about 805 pages!
