8 ways to humanize your business on social media

November 20, 2011 by Aaron 24 Comments

I had a conversation with one of my friends on twitter. We were discussing about the importance of humanizing a brand on the social web, sadly not many businesses are taking the opportunity to do it. Some of them treats it as another advertising medium to promote and sell their bad product.

Yesterday, I wrote a couple of methods that brands can use to humanize their brand on Facebook, so I decided to take them and convert it into a picture. Β (my photoshop skills needs tons of improvement).

What do you think? Did I miss out anything? Share your thoughts below.

I think having a recognisable face and voice – one that is true to you- are some of the most important things to do.

@Charlotte74 Indeed, having a face is one of the toughest. Not many companies would want that. Voice is easier though, but both takes time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. πŸ˜€

Agree with #8. Got some local businesses ’round my neck o’ the woods that just jumped on Twitter, but their tweet stream looks like another RSS feed.

“Reward your fans” is the most difficult. How can a small business owner rewards their fans with limited budget?

  13. AskAaronLee says

@Sophia.C. Hi Sophia, I’ll cover more of this in the future, it doesn’t need to be expensive. I cofounded a company that sells apparel to our customers, we reward our fans by sending a couple of them apparels that they like or an accessory like handbags etc when they return to purchase another item.

It might cost a little short term, but the customers that we reward ended up purchasing more items the next round.

Depends on your niche. Creativity is endless πŸ˜€

@jureklepic I agree, in 2012, those companies would definitely be in big trouble for sure.

Haha, your photoshop skills are great! Very cute picture :). I really like these tips… it sounds like a lot comes down to being human and being interested (in others, your customers, fans, etc). It’s an old Dale Carnegie idea but I think it applies really well to social media and business. Being interested (ie: in fans, what they care about, how they feel) is probably the easiest way to be interesting, figure out good ways to reward them and post stuff they’ll care about.

    Hey!

Very Glad you posted this specific example because some people believe this doesn’t actually happen. I believe it will be helped for all media internship employers.

    Thanks

I think the most important thing is to not promote the product 24/7. Agreed that the primary purpose is business, but the product promotion should be done in a way that does not turn off people. Too many business think social media is just an online form of tv advertising and simply try to keep pushing their products down the throat of the audience.
