What exactly is social media? Since there are so many “Experts” in social media as reported by Mashable 15750 social media experts on twitter. This should be an easy question for them to answer. For me….

Social Media is social interaction combined with the use of the web to create or add value. by @askaaronlee

Social websites like facebook, twitter, or forums, blogs are all part of social media.

I found some videos on youtube that are actually quite interesting.

Here are two long definitions.
Social Media: An umbrella term that defines the various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words and pictures. This interaction, and the manner in which information is presented, depends on the varied perspectives and “building” of shared meaning, as people share their stories, and understandings. by formicmedia

Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media uses Internet and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers by wikipedia

Thanks for the post Aaron, I love the first video which serves social media well with it's explanation. About to watch the second one now (crap at multitasking).

This is excellent for those who don't have a never used about social media, and those who use it and don't have a clue about it.

Thank you Paul, the first video was actually the original title post of my this post lol, I changed it after a while =)

    Thank you Hal =)
I post this because there were too many people talking about social media and saying social media is twitter.

Thank you for the thought-provoking post, Aaron.

Both of the long definitions are great in expanding on the key word of 'media.' Some businesspeople think of social media as a critical marketing tool, while others see it as another way to network. (I often find my clients use it as a way to procrastinate from their marketing.) I like to think of social media as yet another media channel with a different set of controls and great possibilities.
